Road marking paint has to dry fast enough to reopen a road, stay bright under traffic and sun, and bond to bitumen or concrete. In South Africa the specification for solvent-based road marking paint is SANS 731-1 (formerly SABS 731-1). Marindec manufactures to it, and a certificate is available on request.
Type 1 and Type 2
SANS 731-1 paints come in two types. Type 1 is formulated for machine (spray) application on roads. Type 2 is a general-purpose marking paint for brush, roller or spray: parking areas, demarcation lines, sports areas, and factory and warehouse floors. Marindec makes both. The white and yellow 5L tins on this site are fast-drying Type 2.

How much paint do I need?
At 150 µm, one litre covers 4–5 m² in theory, so a 5L tin covers about 20–25 m² of line on a new surface. A standard 100 mm line works out at roughly 200–250 metres of line per 5L tin. Re-marking at 75 µm roughly doubles that. Rough or porous surfaces and spray losses reduce real coverage, so allow extra.
Applying it
- Surface: clean, dry and free of gravel and loose material. On concrete, remove curing compounds and dust first.
- Temperature: the paint should preferably be above 15°C. Don't apply in rain or onto a damp surface.
- Stir well before use. Thin only if necessary, with road marking thinner.
- Apply by brush, roller or spray to the full film thickness in one pass. Thin lines wear out fast.
- Keep traffic off until it is past the no-pick-up time (under 15 minutes), and ideally until hard dry (45 minutes).
Warehouse and factory floors
Type 2 road marking paint works for demarcation lines on concrete floors. For whole-floor colour or walkways, use Floor & Stoep paint, a medium hi-build gloss enamel. See also the SANS colour chart for safety colours.
