Start with the paint type
Most specifications name the binder and the standard first. Marindec's white and yellow road marking paints are a modified alkyd made to SANS 731-1, for bituminous roads. If the specification asks for a different binder, such as a water-based or thermoplastic material, this paint isn't a match however the other figures compare.
What each figure means
| Specification line | What it tells you | Marindec data sheet |
|---|---|---|
| Binder | The resin that holds the film together | Modified alkyd |
| Dry film thickness (DFT) | How thick the line is once dry. Thicker lines last longer under traffic | 150 µm on a new road, 75 µm when re-marking |
| Coverage (spread rate) | Area per litre at a stated film thickness | 4–5 m² per litre at 150 µm DFT |
| Surface dry or no-pick-up time | When tyres can cross the line without lifting paint | Under 15 minutes |
| Hard dry | When the line takes full traffic | 45 minutes |
| Application method | Brush, roller, spray or line-marking machine | Brush, roller or spray |
| Viscosity, specific gravity, non-volatile content (NVC) by mass | How the paint flows and weighs in the tin | Not stated. Ask us |
Compare drying times at the same conditions
Drying times depend on temperature, humidity and film thickness. A specification often gives them at a set condition, for example 23 °C and 50% relative humidity. Our data sheet gives the times without a stated condition, so if a specification asks for a hard dry faster than 45 minutes, send it to us before you order.
Compare coverage at the same film thickness
A coverage figure means little without the film thickness it was measured at. A paint that covers more square metres per litre at a thinner film isn't necessarily going further: the line is simply thinner. Check the specification's coverage and DFT as a pair against the data sheet's pair.
- Rough, porous or open-textured surfaces take more paint than the theoretical figure.
- Spray application loses some paint to overspray.
- Re-marking at 75 µm uses about half the paint per metre of a new line at 150 µm.
Figures the data sheet doesn't give
Some specifications list viscosity in Krebs units (KU), specific gravity or non-volatile content by mass. These are batch-control figures and aren't on our road marking data sheet. If your specification requires them, send it to us and we'll tell you what we can confirm.
What to send with a quote request
- The specification or data sheet you need to meet.
- Colours. The data sheet lists white, yellow, black and red.
- Volume and pack size.
- The surface: new road, re-marking, or another surface.
- Whether you need the SANS 731-1 certificate, which is available on request.
For application, coverage and drying on site, see the SANS 731-1 road marking guide. To send a specification, use request a quote.
