Figures are from the Marindec technical data sheets (TDS). ZPPW15 is a fast-drying alkyd primer with a zinc-modified phosphate anti-corrosive additive. The enamel data sheet lists ZPPW primers as a suitable undercoat.

Prepare the steel

The coating can only be as good as the surface under it. Degrease first, then remove rust, old flaking paint and millscale.

  • Blast to Sa 2½ (near-white metal) for exterior and wet-area steel, and prime the same day. For small areas, the data sheets also allow cleaning with sandpaper.
  • The surface must be dry and free of dirt, dust and oily residue.
  • Paint only when the steel is at least 3 °C above the dew point.

Full methods are in the steel surface preparation guide.

Prime

  1. Stripe-coat edges, welds and bolt heads by brush first. That's where corrosion starts.
  2. Spray ZPPW15 at 20–35 µm DFT, which is 130–230 µm wet. Airless spray is preferred and needs no thinning. For air spray, thin with FD thinner, 15% at most.
  3. Apply the topcoat once the primer is touch dry, after about 10 minutes, and within 2 hours.

Topcoat

  1. Spray Fast Dry Enamel spray grade at 20–45 µm DFT, which is 90–200 µm wet. For air spray, thin 10% at most with FD or QD thinner.
  2. Check the dry film with a gauge. See the film thickness guide.
  3. The enamel is hard dry in about an hour. Plan handling and reassembly around that.

Colour

Mining equipment is usually specified in SANS 1091 safety colours or the equipment maker's colour. Give us the code, or a sample if there isn't one. See how to order enamel in a specific colour.

When a one-coat product suits better

AGRIP30+ is a primer and finishing enamel in one, at 20–45 µm DFT per coat with an overcoat window of 2–3 hours. Its drying time depends on the wet film applied, from about 3 to 16 hours hard dry, so it suits equipment that can stand longer than an hour.

What to order together

  • ZPPW15 primer, Fast Dry Enamel spray grade in your colour, and FD thinner for thinning and cleaning.
  • The technical data sheet and safety data sheet (SDS) for each product, if your site needs them.
  • Pack sizes: the primer comes in 25L, and the enamel and thinner in 5L to 200L.

Tell us the machine, where it works and the colour when you request a quote. See also paints for mining and the Product Assistant, which answers application questions like this one from the same data sheets.
